Over its long history Sandwich has changed in countless ways and future change is inevitable. As a living community it is not a static place immune to change. Our town’s challenge is to plan for and manage change in a way that works to retain the town’s desirable characteristics as we move into the future.

One essential desirable quality of the Sandwich we live in today is its mixture of people of all ages, talents, professions and trades. Currently this mix is changing. Vital segments of the mix are increasingly being squeezed out of our community by market forces that limit housing options. As a result:

    - It is increasingly difficult to keep an adequate population of children that ensures a certain future for our school.
    - Our pool of young residents for vital volunteer organizations like our fire and rescue service is increasingly strained.
    - Some local employers are challenged to find employees that can afford housing in town.

We believe that a more diverse housing stock in Sandwich can begin to correct these undesirable changes in our community. This issue is the focus of Sandwich Citizens’ Housing.
