How big is the town geographically?
The town encompasses 60,224 acres of which 1,856 acres are under water—Mostly Squam Lake. The remaining acreage is split between White Mountain National Forest (16,896 acres), Current Use (22,800 acres) which is at least temporarily unavailable for development, and 2,169 acres of land in permanent conservation. This leaves 16,503 acres for existing buildings or new development, however we note that the current use land is available for development upon payment of a fee equivalent to 10% of the assessed value of land removed from current use.
Town Population
Full time population has doubled in thirty years and is now estimated to be 1,400. (Source US Census).
Seasonal i.e. summer population is significantly higher with estimates in the 3,000 to 4,000 range but no hard statistics are available.
Population Growth
Where does the population growth come from? The growth in population appears to come predominantly from a net inward migration as opposed to babies being born to Sandwich Residents. Note that deaths of town residents each year far outstrip local births.
